By providing an innovative power-alarm security system and unique fixture retrofit for a 500-store rollout in record time, Vanguard Products Group solved a major merchandise security problem for Alltel stores. The solution reduced potential shoplifting and enhanced the consumers’ shopping experience.
Finding the Solution
In August 2005, Alltel stores began experiencing excessive false alarms on existing wireless phone displays as well as increased theft. Merchandising security problems created by the displays' alarm-only system involved inordinate labor time, frequent parts replacement, and fraying cord reels. A conservative estimate on potential repairs amounted to one service call per year for each of 500 stores plus parts and labor.
Vanguard’s loss prevention consultant reviewed Alltel’s system. Live cell phones on display used an AC power adapter with two cords that left the phones unfriendly to consumers and, in some cases, unprotected from shoplifters, resulting in an unacceptable rate of lost merchandise. Vanguard suggested replacing the system with its Generation-3 (G-3) power-alarm solution.
After extensive testing, Vanguard's system was found to eliminate the false alarm problem while providing power and security to the handsets on a single cable system.
Getting It Into Stores
Within a week of the system review, Vanguard presented Alltel with a rendering of a unique bracket and single retracting cable system, which would accommodate all existing fixtures as a retrofit. A week after its approval, a prototype was developed.
In December, Vanguard began shipping cords and system components. Soon after, Alltel requested an immediate retrofit for 500 stores. Ultimately, Vanguard installed more than 15,000 positions in 10 weeks, working with Design Forum and Creative Cabinets to meet the tight deadline.
Vanguard developed kits to accommodate each store’s unique fixtures including an alarm box, power supply, batteries, cord reels, custom brackets, and a screwdriver. Each contained simple plug-and-play instructions for installers, who trained store personnel. A Vanguard project manager’s tracking report was used to monitor and troubleshoot the completion of installations and fixture-specific security kits.
Securing the Benefits
In addition to secured handsets, the system provided another benefit to Alltel. Relieved of the need to baby-sit the power-alarm system, Alltel sales staff had more time available to sell 10 to 30 percent more products and services. |
