Industry Leaders Share Favorite Retail Design Ideas


For those who want to see what’s new and exciting, but don’t have time to visit all the new stores, NASFM's panel of leading retailers and designers shared their top picks in store fixturing, visual presentations, and overall store design at a GlobalShop conference session March 8, 2007, in Las Vegas. Moderated by Robert Reeve Frackelton, vice president of Reeve Store Equipment Co., the session featured Christian Davies, vice president of retail design strategy and creative director for FRCH Design Worldwide; David Milne, principal and creative director of DMD Ltd.; and Judith Bell, Group Manager of MAGIC at Target Corp.


Christian Davies' Personal Picks: New York Inspiration

Christian Davies heads the specialty brands studio at FRCH Design Worldwide and runs the brand development group in partnership with business units throughout the firm. Trained as a retail designer, Davies began his career with Fitch Worldwide working for clients in the European and U.S. markets. He also has held executive positions with The Retail Group and Utility Inc., both based in Seattle. He retains a hands-on creative role at FRCH, and his work has won numerous design awards, including an IDSA/Business Week Designs of the Decade Bronze medal in 1999. A frequently published commentator on international design trends, Davies’ work has been featured in such publications as World Architecture, The Boston Globe, USA Today and The London Sunday Times.

David Milne's Personal Picks: Pop-up Retail

With more than 22 years of retail design experience, David Milne specializes in the retail and services sectors. DMD Ltd. provides clients with complete custom branded environments and merchandising solutions. Milne combines his passion for design, attention to detail, and business strategy, incorporating interior, graphic, and industrial design in a full spectrum of projects from service hospitality to hard goods. Clients have included such companies as Bell Canada, Cara, Bridgestone, Ace Hardware, Rockport, Maxfli-Dunlop, and T-Mobile. Milne’s background prior to founding his Toronto-based company in 1987 includes working on a diverse range of retail projects worldwide with The Watt Group and serving as a college professor and retail consultant to design firms and agencies.

Judy Bell's Personal Picks: Chocolate Stores

Judy Bell is group manager of MAGIC (Marketing & Guest Insight Center) of Target Corp. She specializes in retail trend research, reporting, and internal consulting. Bell serves on two retail design industry boards—the Planning and Visual Education Partnership board and the DDI Magazine Editorial Advisory Board. She has served as an advisor to the Digital Media Board and for 10 years was an officer of the National Association of Display Industries (NADI), which is now the visual merchandising division of NASFM. Bell has received two visual merchandising and design industry awards, the Luminary Award in 2006 and the Markopoulos Award in 1999. Her book Silent Selling, published in 2006 by Fairchild in New York City, has been adopted by more than 175 colleges and universities. She is working on an edited version of Silent Selling for retailers. Other forthcoming books by Bell include Energetic Environments and StreetSmart.
