Callison Creates Community Gathering Place in Denver's Southlands

A modern take on classic main streets of historic Midwestern towns, Southlands has quickly become a community gathering place. With a driveable and walkable Main Street, the open-air design and pedestrian-oriented scale of Southlands brings the feeling of an old-fashioned shopping experience to the heart of the local community.

“Our goal was a unique, outdoor retail destination that would be a draw for the community,” said George Wickwire, Callison principal. “The greater Denver area is heavily retailed, so we had to do things differently. This lively, outdoor town center combines a full spectrum of retail with office space.”

Southlands features four blocks of main street retail, sidewalk cafes, and boutique office spaces and features an outdoor fireplace, an ice-skating rink, a pop jet fountain, and several public plazas. With contemporary updates on traditional elements such as a cinema and a landmark clock tower, Southlands offers national caliber amenities with an inviting local identity. Callison's design leverages the spirit of the local environment and incorporates natural colors and materials such as stone, rock, and brick, as well as generous, mature landscaping.

“Our vision of a place where friends and families could gather for shopping, entertainment, and events has become a reality,” said Don Provost, principal, Alberta Development Partners. “It is gratifying to see shoppers enjoying the more than 140 retailers and restaurants as well as the many events and activities.” Events include a farmer’s market, live musical performances, holiday activities, and a grand Fourth of July celebration.
