Inspired by international fashion trends and the exquisite craftsmanship of local artisans, this new flagship department store is a landmark for establishing Seibu’s brand in Indonesia.

The largest international department store in the country, Seibu caters to fashion-conscious, high-end customers and features the most exclusive lines in international design.

“Seibu Jakarta bridges cultures through its design, while respecting the heritage and customs unique to its location,” says Dawn Clark, principal at Callison. “This approach has helped Seibu establish a strong presence in the Indonesian market while maintaining its position as a fashion leader in the international marketplace.”

Combining its global design expertise with the artisanship of local craftsmen, Callison captured the strength and essence of the Seibu brand for the Indonesian market.

“Seibu Jakarta highlights the latest in store design and visual merchandising, making it a premier destination to launch new brands for the first time in this part of the world,” says Alan Thomson, director operational and business development for Seibu.

“The Seibu flagship is a store not just for the people of Jakarta, but for Indonesia and the entire southeast Asia region.”

Texture, Color, Pattern, and Details

The bold architecture and design, together with vivid fashion displays, creates a memorable shopping experience.

In contrast to the stark, structured aesthetic of other stores in the market, Seibu Jakarta’s rich texture, color, pattern, and details create a theatrical environment for shoppers to explore, experience, and imagine.

The store is centered around a five-story etched glass, chrome, and mirror atrium with cantilevered stages showcasing custom displays and visual merchandising. Each level is designed as a distinct space, while public spaces are tied together through effusive displays and finishes.

Finely detailed and layered installations using cherry blossoms symbolically reference Seibu’s Japanese culture and heritage, while hand-cut marble patterns, textured woodwork, and local materials for patterned wall coverings showcase the work of local skilled craftsmen.

Handmade marble busts, carved wood statues, and customer leather pieces accent intricate hand-carved and inlaid marble floors throughout the store.
