NASFM Retail Design Awards 2007:
shu uemura and Lily Simon Take Top Honors

NASFM celebrated the 36th anniversary of its awards presentation on Wednesday, March 7, during an awards ceremony at the Venetian Hotel in Las Vegas following the end of the first day of GlobalShop. In total, 52 awards were presented in recognition of the inspirational design of retail environments. During the event, 14 projects were awarded Grand Prizes onstage. In addition, Fixture of the Year was awarded to Lily Simon for its elegant fixture grouping, one of two Store Fixture Awards earned by the store in the competition. Shu uemura, submitted by NASFM member High Country Millwork, was named Store of the Year. Fifteen Outstanding Merits, two Special Installation Awards, three Visual Presentation Awards and 16 Store Fixture Awards were presented in the Winners Circle following the presentation.

Also at the Retail Design Awards presentation, DDI recognized Bloomingdale’s Executive Vice President of Creative Services, Jack Hruska, as the 2007 Markopoulos Award recipient. In addition, NASFM presented its second annual Above & Beyond Award to fixture manufacturer and member Custom Surroundings, based in Valley City, Ohio, for the company’s ongoing partnership with Stride Rite and over-the-top commitment during the rapid rollout of a new concept.

This year’s judges reviewed 1,173 images of 186 projects. Judges were Christian Davies, Vice President, Retail Design Strategy/Creative Director, FRCH Design Worldwide; Ray Ehscheid, Vice President, Brand Manager, Bank of America; Kristin Godsey, Associate Publisher/Executive Editor, VM+SD magazine; Ignaz Gorischek, Vice President, Store Development, The Neiman Marcus Group Inc.; Ted Jacobs, Creative Director, Gensler Retail/Studio 585; Lynn Knutson, Visual Merchandising Program Manager, Harley-Davidson Motor Co.; RoxAnna Sway, Editor in Chief, DDI magazine; and Marianne Wilson, Senior Editor, Chain Store Age magazine.

The winners were selected from projects submitted from around the world that were completed between January and December 2006. A complete list of winning projects and the companies that contributed to them, including photos and descriptions, is available from the menu at the left and in a special supplement in the April issue of DDI magazine, the presenting sponsor of the NASFM Retail Design Awards.
