A mammoth 628,600 sq. ft., this flagship relaunches the 175-year-old brand after bankruptcy. Driven by an analysis of Asian department stores, the design organizes merchandise on 10 floors via lifestyle rather than product. The food court differentiates SOGO with two compressed bottom floors. A three-story, LED-backlit waterfall anchors the upper public space. Elements include luminous layering, repeated motifs of gingko leaves and cherry blossoms, custom tile, floors inlaid with laser-cut marble leaves, hand-blown glass, and thousands of Swarovski crystals.

This remodel opened up the 150,000-sq.-ft. space previously characterized by departmental divisions. Glass slab walls backdrop merchandise without compromising the openness. Natural materials—plaster, light woods, and wool carpet—and touches such as a backlit display table exude modern refinement. Expensive materials in key areas subtly suggest a penchant for luxe: gold mosaic tile in the shoe department, hand-painted birch tree canvas mural in the jewelry department, and crystal visual merchandising lines in the designer area.

For its new 21,000-sq.-ft. prototype store, Woolworths supports the home experience within an industrialized volume through individual retail pods. An open ceiling with exposed ductwork is broken up by treatments such as long strips of dropped panels with recessed and track lighting in the housewares section. Mixed lighting applications throughout the store create drama. Touches such as suspended white kite-like structures in the in-store restaurant invite shoppers to linger, rather than simply refuel for more shopping.
