With extensive experience in restaurant and retail design, Steve Starr recently joined Charlotte, N.C., design firm Tobin+Dudley PLLC. He will focus on building the firm's retail and restaurant practice.
Starr was most recently studio principal of store design for Little, where he coordinated and managed all phases of retail, restaurant, hospitality, and entertainment projects. Design awards earned under his leadership at Little include a NASFM Retail Design Award Grand Prize for Home Economist Market in Charlotte; SADI awards for a Cosi restaurant national prototype and for Blue Restaurant & Bar in Charlotte; Chain Store Age Store of the Year awards for Blue, Firebirds Rocky Mountain Grill national prototype, and The Biltmore Winery remodel and expansion in Ashville, N.C.; an AIA Merit Award for The Biltmore Winery; and an IIDA Gold Award for Dean & Deluca Wine Room in Charlotte.
With expertise in retail brand refinement, conceptual
design, and retail development, Starr also has worked
with Planet Hollywood, Plow & Hearth, Krispy Kreme
Doughnuts, Lucky Brand Jeans, Castaldi’s Market & Grill,
JT Colton’s Woodfired Grill, Fore the Links Golf
Apparel, Westbank Anglers, and The Monkey Bar. His career
includes stints with Sylvan Joseph Architects in White
Plains, N.Y.; Rockwell Group in New York; Stephen W.
Schwartz Architects in Livingston, N.J.; and Livnot
U’Lehibanot in Safed, Israel.
A member of the Institute of Store Planners (ISP) and
a Construction Documents Technologist (CDT), Starr has
been a speaker at Retail Construction Expo West and Hospitality
Design Expo and has been published in Restaurant
Hospitality,
Chain Store Age, Nations Restaurant News, VM&SD and
Contract Design.
